Start by dropping one ink color on the pad in your desired design or gradient. Use the spatula included with the ink refill to press the color into the stamp pad. Be sure not to skip this step, as pressing the ink in will make sure the color is in the proper place, and also help the ink penetrate beyond the surface layer of the stamp. Press down between colors to blend and create a smooth gradient. Repeat these steps with each color until the whole stamp pad is filled just the way you want.
